2009 MID CHESHIRE CLOSED TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS Winington Park Rec Centre - 1st April 2009
The Mid Cheshire TTs League Championships Finals night took place at
Winnington Park Recreation Club on Wed 1 April (no joke!).
First up were the open semi-finals with Geoff Cummings overcoming Dave Nelson
in four sets and Jake Shaw comfortably defeating Winston Duff in three. Dave
Nelson then beat Geoff Mee in the Veteran’s singles final. After a close first
set, Dave took the next two 11-6, 11-5.
This was followed by two of the doubles events: Jeremy Ikin paired up with
John Perry to defeat Aiden Ramftler and Pete Battison in the drawn doubles,
while Dave Nelson partnered Brian Willcox to victory over John Gregson and
Helena Dennett in the vets doubles. In the closest match of the night, and
with the crowd of around 50 onlookers watching on, Brian kept it together to
help Dave to his second title of the night, 11-9, 12-10, 9-11, 15-13.
The Division 2 final was a ladies affair, which resulted in a straight sets
win for Club Mid Cheshire’s Gail Johns over Winnington Park’s Marie
Turner. The penultimate event, the open doubles final, saw Dave Nelson back
for his 4th match of the night. Partnering John Perry against the
pairing of Keith Mitchell and Winston Duff, Nelson and Perry won the first
set, but then some sparkling hitting from Duff and steady play from Mitchell
saw the under dogs home in four sets.
This left the open final between Jake Shaw (CMC) and Geoff Cummings (Lostock).
Shaw looked the stronger in the first two sets, winning 11-8, 11-8 before the
third set saw some fantastic rallies, with Cummings’ blocking getting the
better of Shaw’s heavy topspin to take a big lead. Geoff couldn’t quite get
over the finish line, as Jake surged back to take the final set 11-9.
The evening concluded with the presentation of trophies for the Mid Cheshire
League titles, with Lostock 3rds (Dave Myles, Tom Beevers, Dave Motherwell and
Jeff Slowley) winning Division Two and the Club Mid Cheshire squad of Jake
Shaw, Keith Mitchell, Craig Lee, Fiona Dennett and Helen McCreary claiming the
Division One prize.
